Waxing is a popular hair removal method that offers smooth skin for weeks. However, proper care before and after waxing is essential to avoid irritation, ingrown hairs, and other skin issues. In this post, I will share practical advice on how to prepare your skin and care for it after waxing. This guide is designed to help you get the best results and maintain healthy skin.
Waxing Preparation Guide: How to Get Ready
Preparation is key to a successful waxing session. The right steps can reduce discomfort and improve the waxing outcome.
Exfoliate gently 2-3 days before waxing. Use a mild scrub such as Ruff Stuff which I recommend to all of my clients and have stock available to purchase to ensure my waxers get the best results. This helps prevent ingrown hairs.
Avoid sun exposure or sunbeds for at least 24 hours before waxing. Sunburned skin is more sensitive and prone to damage.
Keep skin clean and dry on the day of waxing. Avoid applying lotions, oils, or deodorants before your appointment.
Trim hair if it is longer than 1/4 inch. This length is ideal for waxing to grip the hair properly. It's about the size of a grain of rice.
Stay hydrated and moisturise your skin regularly in the days leading up to waxing. I recommend using Ruff Stuff body oil or Outback Organics Bush Balm for intimate areas - also available to purchase from my clinic. Just email or message to purchase.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of waxing. These can increase skin sensitivity and discomfort.
Wear loose clothing to your appointment to prevent friction on freshly waxed skin.
Take simple analgesia if you would like to, most people find they can do without.
Following these steps will prepare your skin for waxing and reduce the risk of irritation.

What to Expect During Waxing
Understanding the waxing process helps you stay calm and informed.
When you arrive, we will go through your medical form so please ensure this is completed online prior to arrival.
Once you are comfortable on the bed I will cleanse the area ready to be waxed.
Hot wax is applied, usually in the direction of hair growth.
Once set on the skin, this is lifted and removed against the direction of growth to get rid of the hair
On legs only I use strip wax which is applied in the direction of hair growth and then a paper strip is pressed on the wax and quickly pulled off against the hair growth.
Both methods remove hair from the root.
The process is repeated until the area is hair-free.
After waxing, a soothing jasmine oil or a gel is applied to calm the skin.
Waxing can cause mild redness and sensitivity, which usually subsides within a few hours.
What are the 5 Steps of Skincare?
A consistent skincare routine supports skin health before and after waxing. Here are the five essential steps:
Cleansing - Remove dirt, oil, and impurities with a gentle cleanser.
Exfoliating - Use a mild exfoliant such as Ruff Stuff Daily Scrub 2-3 times a week to prevent clogged pores and ingrown hairs.
Moisturising - Keep skin hydrated with a suitable moisturiser such as Ruff Stuff Body Oil and/or Bush Balm on intimate areas.
Sun Protection - Apply sunscreen daily to protect from UV damage on any areas of exposed skin
Treatment - Use spot treatments or masks as needed for specific issues such as ingrown hair - jelly masks are available as add on treatments in my clinic. Just ask for details.
Following these steps regularly will improve your skin’s resilience and appearance.

Skincare After Waxing: What to Do
Post-waxing care is crucial to soothe the skin and prevent complications.
Avoid hot baths, saunas, and steam rooms for 24-48 hours. Heat can irritate freshly waxed skin.
Do not apply perfumed products or deodorants on the waxed area for at least 24 hours. I advise using Outback Organics Bush Balm for intimate areas and Ruff Stuff Body oil for all other parts of the body.
Wear loose clothing to avoid friction and irritation.
Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for 48 hours to prevent pigmentation changes.
Exfoliate gently after 3-4 days to prevent ingrown hairs.
Avoid heavy exercise for 24 hours to reduce sweating and irritation.
If you notice persistent redness, bumps, or discomfort, consult a professional.

Maintaining Healthy Skin Between Waxing Sessions
To keep your skin smooth and healthy between waxing appointments:
Moisturise daily to maintain skin hydration.
Exfoliate regularly but gently to prevent ingrown hairs.
Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive scrubs that can damage the skin.
Protect your skin from the sun with SPF 30 or higher.
Schedule waxing appointments every 4-6 weeks to maintain hair-free skin without over-irritation.
Consistent care will improve your waxing experience and skin condition over time.
